This darker mode is currently available to beta testers of Office 365, so it should be rolling out to all Word users in the coming months. Dark Mode is a dramatic new look that's easy on your eyes and helps you focus on your work.

This new Word dark mode update looks similar to what currently exists in OneNote, which has options to switch between a dark and light canvas. There will be a Switch Modes button in the Word ribbon to change between a dark and light canvas, and options in Word to permanently disable the dark canvas, too. Word will get a new switch mode button for its darker canvas. Reds, blues, yellows, and other bright colors will be “shifted slightly to mute the overall effect of the color palette” and match the dark background. “With Dark mode, you’ll notice that the previously white page color is now a dark grey/black.” While the canvas will change, colors in a document will also be adjusted. Enable Eclipse Dark Mode On macOS (MacBooks, Mac Minis or iMacs): Open Eclipse Application.
A future update to Word will include the ability to switch the canvas into dark mode, too. To switch back, repeat these steps but select Default under the General tab. From the General tab select Dark under Themes. Currently, Word has a dark mode that modifies the ribbon and toolbars, but the canvas stays bright white. To enable dark mode in Outlook, you need to have the Black Office theme turned on ( Options > General > Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office ): To turn the dark background on in Outlook, you can either use the button next to the reply option: or the switch background option on the Home or Message tab: The checkbox never change the message. All you need to do is open Microsoft Word on your Mac computer, and then go to Settings > General > Appearance > Dark to enable the dark mode.
